Hi all! I have been completely floored by the response to my
“Adopt a Classroom” project. Between the sign-ups, emails, messages, comments…I
literally can’t do it all. I have a 6 month old at home with me right now, and
even if he wasn’t, there’s no way I could keep up with it all on my own! I have
been very fortunate to have some great friends offer to jump in and help with
matching classrooms and replying to messages.
All that being said, I would love to respond to each email
and comment, but it would be completely impossible at this point. This is a
GOOD problem to have, because it means so many of you want to help. However, I
also feel I should prioritize matching classrooms right now. I want your
questions to be answered, so here are some of the most frequently asked
questions. If you still don’t find the answer to your question, please reach
out.
I want to help, what
can I do?
Please, please, please use this link to sign up. I’m not
able to go through the comments and emails and match you – going through this form is the only way.
How does this work
exactly?
If you are applying to adopt a classroom, please use this form. You will be
matched with a teacher and I’ll send you their contact info, a little about
their situation, and a list of supplies they need most immediately. After you
receive this email, my part is done! You will contact the teacher you matched
with and see how you can best help them, and then put together a plan with your
students (or group) to help meet their needs.
What am I committing
to by signing up? Can you give a rough financial estimate of helping out a
classroom?
The only thing you’re committing to is trying to help this classroom in some way. In no way does the
teacher expect you to get everything they need. Many have expressed gratitude
for absolutely anything to help. Currently, I am able to match 3-4 classrooms
who want to help with 1 Texas classroom right now, which is great as they are
hopefully able to receive more of what their students need!
I’m not a teacher,
can I still sign up to adopt a classroom?
Short answer…yes! We’ve had girl scout troops, churches, running
groups, and businesses all sign up. This is wonderful since it’s all about helping
the kids who need it!! If you are an individual, considering gathering some
friends and family to help so that you are able to maximize your impact on the
classroom you adopt. Sign up using the form here, and when it asks for
grade/school, just put your group name or “family.”
My grade level/school
wants to adopt more than one classroom…or wants to adopt a whole school…
If your grade level wants to adopt more than one classroom,
please have each of you apply (or if you want to adopt only 2 classrooms, then
please just have 2 of you apply). Then you’ll be matched with classrooms and
can work on that as a project together. If your school wants to collectively
adopt a school, please put that on the form where it says
grade/school…”School adopting school.”
Is this just for schools in Houston?
No, it is for any school in TX deeply affected by Hurricane Harvey.
How does shipping
work?
Shipping is your responsibility, so please keep that in mind
when considering what you are collecting.
Is there a list of
supplies somewhere?
No. Once you apply, I will work to match you with a
classroom. I’ll send you what that teacher has requested as their most
immediate needs.
What kinds of things
are the teachers needing?
True to a teacher’s heart, most teachers are asking for
things for their students, such as hygienic supplies, school uniforms, and
backpacks. Basic school supplies are also in demand!
So I need to buy
these items and ship them?
You can. Another option is to collect donations and purchase
supplies directly from Amazon. They can ship directly to that teacher’s school
for you, and you will save greatly on shipping (especially if you have Prime!).
You could also send an electronic Amazon giftcard.
Are you confirming
that the people applying are teachers in need?
Teachers who apply must use their school district email to
apply. I strongly suggest you ship only to their schools as well. Some schools
are greatly flooded and won’t be open for a while – just wait until they can
accept shipments to send anything. This will ensure that your donations are
going exactly where they should be – I completely trust teachers, but there may
be others who try to use this as an opportunity to help themselves. Pay
attention to the email of the classroom you are matched with, and use your own
discretion.
I want to be matched
with a school in a certain area, a Catholic school, a first grade classroom,
etc. Can you do that?
We are doing our best to roughly match grade levels, or at
least primary grades with primary, etc. I have had several requests for
teachers to be matched with a certain area, and I would LOVE to make that
happen, but to be honest, it is very time consuming. As I type this, we sit at
5,400 submissions. That is A LOT of people to match. Trying to make particular
pairings, especially by location, takes a much longer time. We aren’t able to
take requests like that right now, I’m sorry. Feel free to reach out to a particular
school or area on your own if you have a connection with them! J Please be flexible, as
there are a lot of teachers and students who need help!
Are schools able to
receive the shipments?
Some schools will be opening on September 5th,
and some have not heard yet when they will reopen. This is something you will
need to coordinate with the teacher you are matched with!
What is the timeline
for getting matched?
We are working through them in the order they are coming in.
There are an amazing number of submissions, so it is taking some time. I ask
that you please be patient…we are working on it as quickly as we can!! We are
hoping within the week at the latest. You will receive an email letting you
know you’ve been matched.
I would LOVE to see what you and your classrooms (groups)
are doing to help!!! Please use the hashtag #AdoptaTXclassroom to tag your
pictures, and feel free to tag me (@sunsandsecondgrade) as well.
A huge and overwhelming THANK YOU goes out to all of you who
are signing up to help. It is an amazing thing to watch people come together
like this.
Most importantly, the teachers in TX are going to be doing
the real work in the coming weeks and months, as they’ll have lots of broken
students coming into their classroom. It takes a special person to be a
teacher, but these wonderful men and women will be giving that a whole new
meaning. Our hearts and prayers go out to you and your students, and I truly
hope you are able to receive some of the help you need.
We have BOXES ( 18) of Pearson Reading Street...grades K -5 and some ESL...all new.

ReplyDeleteHow do Texas schools sign up? Our students will need help.
ReplyDeleteThere's a link to follow in the above paragraphs that say click here to sign up
DeleteI cannot see link. Can you send?
DeleteYou can use the same form above- there's a selection if you'd like to be adopted. <3
ReplyDeleteOk, thanks. Guess I didn't scroll down enough.
ReplyDeleteIf these teachers have Scholastic Book Club accounts can you have them include their codes? Perhaps we can help restock books to classrooms and fulfill classroom wish lists that the teachers create? Suddenly occurred to me today as I picked up book order forms for my own kids tonight. Love from Michigan! Looking forward to adopting our class :)
ReplyDeleteThat's a great idea!
DeleteSuch a good idea!!!!
DeleteLove this idea! If they didn't have one, could we get them one?
DeleteYou can also call Scholastic and have the orders shipped directly to the school in Texas. You have to call BEFORE placing the order online.
DeleteSchool starts next week for students in Michigan. I am a teacher at a middle school and wonder if you have middle schools on your list. I think our students would think it is cool to donate to a middle school.
ReplyDeleteYes all grade levels and colleges have been affected. No doubt that there are middle schools or intermediate schools that need supplies.
DeleteMy grade level/school wants to adopt more than one classroom…or wants to adopt a whole school…
DeleteIf your grade level wants to adopt more than one classroom, please have each of you apply (or if you want to adopt only 2 classrooms, then please just have 2 of you apply). If your school wants to collectively adopt a school, please put that on the form where it says grade/school…”School adopting school.”
I live in Katy Texas and I know Beck Junior High is completely under water. Those students had only been in school for a few days when this storm hit. These children have lost their homes and now their school. It is devastating. I think it would be awesome to have another Junior high adopt this school. My kids are grown and gone, but I live near that school and know first hand they are in dire need. I am not even sure how soon they will be back in the school. They are telling them they could be out for months. So guessing they will rezone to another school during that time. I think you are doing a wonderful thing!!! Thank you!!!
DeleteSeventy-five percent of the community we serve was completely devastated by Hurricane Harvey. We would love some additional help as our campus is running a Depot for the students and community. We have an Amazon Wish list and are finding a desperate need for air mattresses and more shampoo/conditioner. I would be happy to chat more if you email me at amgreen@pasadenaisd.org Here is our Amazon Wishlist.
DeleteWould you share for me?
For friends outside of Houston wishing to help, this Amazon.com link offers a wishlist of South Houston Intermediate Hurricane Harvey Relief efforts. Together, we will rebuild! Please share. This is our school that we love. Our students and their families need your help.
http://a.co/8ySkEKf
Amazon will ship directly to our campus. We built this "depot" of sorts as our campus was a shelter the first part of the storm. Our students and school community flooded with about five feet of water with low-lying areas. The families will be able to rebuild using these items.
We have boxes of enVision math and reading street as well. I am asking my principal if it would be possible for us to donate these.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh!! I accidentally signed up first as a teacher in need and I am wanting to ADOPT a classroom!! Can You please delete the first one. I am so excited to do this!! Jenniferthompson77@comcast.net
ReplyDeleteI did the same thing! Can you fix mine also? kmmiller@wcboe.org
DeleteI may have done the same thing. I noticed that the sign up to help classrooms in need is currently closed now. It may just be that you are still matching us up, but I wanted to cover all the bases, the name I put on the form is Rebecca Sommerhauser. My grade, as well as several others at my school are very interested in helping out.
DeleteMy email is rsommerhauser@crossroadsschoolskc.org
Is there any way to add school that were hit by the hurricane off the coast? Such as Rockport, Corpus, Port A, etc?
ReplyDeleteIs this just for schools in Houston?
DeleteNo, it is for any school in TX deeply affected by Hurricane Harvey.
There's a link above to follow to sign up. God bless you all!!!
DeleteHere is another link that is looking for classrooms in need as well. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1RFwMF8KbB9Q26r_eIdWuZBYgUDlB5WBiIGYT17q1H1o/mobilebasic
DeleteCan I adopt a specific teacher and class?
ReplyDeleteI am a consultant with Initial Outfitters and we have a campaign going on to supply back packs and insulated lunchboxes to children in K4-2 or 3rd grade - we have already had a few people say they wanted bookbags, but we can help others - don't want to complete the form and be assigned to a classroom when we only have bookbags and lunchboxes - so if anyone is reading this and is in need of bookbags & lunchboxes - please contact me at sunsweetgifts@yahoo.com.
ReplyDeleteI sent you an email, but I haven't heard anything back yet.
DeleteCan our military Spouses Club adopt a classroom? We don't meet until Sept 19, will that be too late?
ReplyDeleteNo! That is not too late because this recovery process will last for months! Many people in our area remain in apartments or hotel rooms but FEMA's deadline is September 25. By then, everyone must exit their current locations. Many people can't afford the contractors to redo the homes. Many of our kids remain in the mold-infested homes.
DeleteOur school is working so hard to help these babies. In a couple weeks, we will still be in need. Please email me at amgreen@pasadenaisd.org to discuss further. We would love to connect with a military group!
Can't wait to get my match! Filled out the form today! Ready to see what class, teachers, kids so I can get my students busy & ready to help! Great way to help fellow teachers - thanks for all you're doing!
ReplyDeleteMy 5th grade class has been watching videos, reading stories in the newspaper and following different stories concerning Hurricane Harvey. I hope we get assigned a school soon so that we can get started!
ReplyDeleteMy 5th grade class has been watching videos, reading stories in the newspaper and following different stories concerning Hurricane Harvey. I hope we get assigned a school soon so that we can get started!
ReplyDeleteI just signed up for a classroom. But I teacher at South Elgin High School, a high school of close to 3000 students we could do more than one classroom. I am looking for a truck from the Chicago/South Elgin area to get supplies to Texas. If I can not find a truck I will work on just shipping a pallet.
ReplyDeleteJulie, I don't know what they are going to match you up with, I signed up as an English Teacher, but we are a whole high school in need. We have about 3200 students at Chavez High, and the neighborhood behind the school was flooded roof high. We have an amazon list together as well. Rebekah.Plourde@houstonisd.org is my email if you are interested and then maybe they can just match us up.
DeleteI am a newly retired Occupational Therapist and would like to help my peers there. Anyway to contact them?
ReplyDeleteI signed up, but I didn't see where we could adopt a school. Our whole school would like to be involved. Can you fix my application to show this? Thank you!
ReplyDeleteDenise.baker@knoxschools.org
I just signed up to adopt a classroom. I only marked 5th grade to adopt, but would be will to help out any grade level. I wasn't sure if I could mark more than one level. I have several other teachers and organizations that have offered to assist me as well :)

Hi Briana,
ReplyDeleteI work for TCEA, a Texas-based nonprofit supporting technology in education in PreK-12 schools. We love the campaign you’ve created, and we’d like to help support it in any way we can.
If you need any assistance in publicizing the campaign or if you need help matching schools in need to those who want to help, we have a lot of connections to Texas schools that we could provide.
You can reach me here or at smeyer@tcea.org.
Best wishes,
Susan Meyer
Communications Specialist, TCEA
Susan, many of our students lost their laptops that they had just picked up in anticipation of school beginning. Do you know of any resources to help them? Rebekah.Plourde@Houstonisd.org
DeleteI signed our PTO up to adopt a classroom or 2. We also have Scholastic Dollars we can donate to the classrooms. Please let me know how we can help. jessica_l_friberg@hotmail.com
ReplyDeleteWe have a Frontier Girls troop that has adopted a classroom through another site and has requested one through this one. The troop is being interviewed by the news and I would like to be able to mention this cause as well, but would like to talk to someone involved first. I know ya'll are swamped but can someone email me at MelissaWilkinsOVS@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI have some toddlers in Maryland that have handmade some encouraging cards and pictures for children in Texas. Unfortunately, we still have not been able to find an outlet to send them to. Would you all be willing to take them and distribute them to children? I started the idea because I'm trying to teach my two year old about giving to those who need help.
ReplyDeleteI would love to have a group of scouts do something like this, but can't find a resource either.
DeleteWe have a troop that will be sending items. Want to send them to us and we can add them? Email me at MelissaWilkinsOVS@gmail.com if you want to join forces :)
DeleteWe are a middle school in Fresno, CA and would like to adopt a school in Fresno, TX if available. If not, we will adopt any school in need! I filled out the form (emily.faith@fresnounified.org) but did not see the option for school adopting school. Thank you so much for all you're doing. We look forward to hearing from you!
ReplyDeleteEmily Faith
Fresno,TX is going to be Ft. Bend ISD if that helps with the matching process! Also there are only elementary schools in the actual city of Fresno. :)
DeleteIs it possible to continue to build relationships with the teachers and their students throughout the year to help put the human face to this disaster and held our students understand the impact of this disaster? I would love to have the opportunity for our students to SKYPE with them or somehow interact with them throughout the year to learn what they have been through, how they've grown and maybe learn some things together.
ReplyDeleteThat is an amazing idea!!
DeleteLove this!
DeleteI'm a teacher at Assumption School in Morristown, NJ. Please reach out. We are Prek-8th grade and ready to help. Post Sandy we understand.

Briana, thank you so much for doing this. It is a great way to get people involved. You have great vision and, obviously, a very open heart for others.
ReplyDeleteHi, I would love to adopt a 1st grade class
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for doing this! I just filled out the form for our school. We are a Montessori School and would love to help another Montessori classroom. I can't wait to see who we get matched with!
ReplyDeleteWe would like to donate items to another 4th grade team of teachers and students. We have 4 teachers/classrooms that will be collecting items.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
I signed up this morning to get on the list, but I am working with my kids' elementary school, our church congregation, and my kids' orthodontist. All want to help and I'd like to get a group of classrooms within the same school if possible. I only signed up one time under myself. What should I do to have a minimum of 5 classes? I'm hoping for far more than that, but don't have much info to give yet. Thank you so much for doing this! My family called Houston home for 5 years and we miss it terribly. We evacuated for Hurricane Rita and it was such a stressful time. I cannot imagine what Texans are going through right now. We want to do our part to help out. Thank you!!!

It is so heartbreaking to watch the devastation that is taking place and to be so far away and feel as though there's nothing you can do. I look at this is a wonderful opportunity as a teacher to help our children and their families. I am ready willing and able to do whatever it takes help get these kiddos whatever they need!
ReplyDeleteRetired PTA Ladies of Daphne AL has signed up to adopt a classroom. On the form, I checked every grade-- not because we can adopt a whole school, but because we want you to match us with whatever grade you choose. We all have had children go through K-12, and just want to help.
ReplyDeleteGroup of teachers in the Austin area willing to travel to Houston or other affected areas to help clean/set up classrooms...contact Meagan.pierce@austinisd.org.
ReplyDeleteTobey Elementary will adopt a school.

Hi. I signed up to be adopted, but there are so many more needy classrooms than mine, that I would like to take mine out of the hat. I have a lot of kids who lost everything, but the school was not as bad as I first thought. I'd rather a classroom in worse shape receive something the need. Thank you. Diana Armitage
ReplyDeleteCould you maybe have them edit your requests from school supplies to hygiene items or other basic needs for the kids? Just a thought.
DeleteI am looking for a classroom of kids who my group of Cub scouts could write cards for. Just to brighten their day a bit and let them know there are other kids thinking about them. Seeing as how your kids still have a lot to work through emotionally, might we be able to arrange something like that?
DeleteHi, I made a huge mistake yesterday, when signing up to adopt a class. For some reason, I thought I was supposed to mark what grade level we were representing, and I clicked on every class prek-12th grade. I know a bonehead mistake. We are a small preschool and also K-12 special needs school. We will only be able to adopt one classroom. I'm so sorry for the misunderstanding. Could someone please contact me at lcollings23@gmail.com? Thank you, Lori

ReplyDeleteI am an adoptive mom and would love to ask if you could make this a 'sponsor a classroom' event. 'Adopta programs' really do exploit adopted children for a cause, when sponsor is what we really want to accomplish. I will gladly sponsor a class.
My autism parent support group (Bronx Parents Autism Support Circle) will like to sign up to adopt a classroom but when I click the link it says it is temporarily closed to new sign ups. We are in NYC. When will it reopen for signups? Our email is bpasccontact@gmail.com.
ReplyDeleteI am looking to sponsor a classroom or two. I am an Admissions Director in Kansas City and 9 years ago we were hit by a Tornado. I would like to give back, the way that people helped us! It says that you are no longer taking applicants for sponsorship. Could someone point me in a direction that we could help a school in need?
ReplyDeleteIs there an estimate of a time when it will reopen for classrooms to adopt a classroom? I have four classrooms in Wyoming that would like to adopt four classrooms. My email is meghan6132@myncsd.org
ReplyDeleteI signed up to adopt a classroom, but our administrators want us to work directly with a school to send a check. Can you please remove me from the list? Thank you. Heather Baldwin 4th grade
ReplyDeleteI am a part of the Student Pennsylvania State Education Association and the Council For Exceptional Children at Mansfield University of Pennsylvania. The two organizations would like to join together and adopt a classroom. I see that submissions are closed at the moment. Any idea when they will be opened back up? I have already pitched the idea of adopting a class at our meeting(s) and everyone is on board, we just need an assignment. Send me an email if you have any details or would be able to get us matched up with someone. We are ready to help!! :)

ReplyDeleteHello! Our school signed up to adopt a classroom on Thursday, Sept 30th and have not received a response. Can you please let me know if it went through? Thank you for your help.

We are looking to adopt an entire high school. When will the form be available again? Please email me at apatrum@dawson.k12.ga.us
ReplyDeleteI signed up my school to adopt another school on August 31st and still haven't heard anything. I just wanted to make sure that my application was viewed and if there was anything else that needed to be done. I'm sure you are busy matching up everyone. My name is Lisa Yates and my email is lyates@district100.com. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteMy school wants to participate. The sign-up hasn't been re-opened, but we are going to start collecting Thursday. Who should I contact to find a school? Thank you!
ReplyDeleteWant to adopt a classroom. Will sign-ups reopen soon?

Hi, I have gotten the enthusiastic "yes" from both my kids classes (2nd and 4th grade) but I haven't heard back. I know you are probably overwhelmed with responses. Let me know if you need help with coordination! My email is jeanne@jhughes.net and we would love to partner with some hurricane-affected classes!
ReplyDeleteHi. I am writing because I submitted a request on behalf of my children's school to help a school affected by the hurricane. We are a small, multi-age Montessori school, so I did not select a specific grade when signing up (instead I selected "None"). I am following up to let you know that we really do want to help a classroom or school, and we are open to any grade (or a multi-age class or school like ours).
ReplyDeleteAnd, thank you for setting up such a beautiful way to help those who really need it!
Thank you,
Jamie

Both of my kids teachers signed up to help classes but we have not heard back either... Students have already started bringing items in to send. Are classes still being matched?
ReplyDeleteThank you,

I signed up last week and haven't heard anything back. I was just wanting to make sure we are on that list because our school has already started collecting the basic things but are trying to wait on a more specific list to send home with our students.
ReplyDeleteThank you,

Please try to screen these classes better. We drove 7 hours to bring supplies to a school that wasn't even damaged.
ReplyDeleteHi! The teacher I was paired with emailed that she really does not need financial assistance. Can you pair me with someone new, if available? Thanks for organizing a great project!

Is there a way I can help you sort through the requests and communications? I know you're overwhelmed with the response and I'm happy to help you. I've signed my class up to help a Harvey-impacted class. jtownsend@mpisd.net
ReplyDeleteHope to hear a reply soon about helping you and helping a classroom.
DeleteI think I filled out the wrong form. I want to help a class room my name is Shannon Keown. I am so so sorry. Please let me know if you still need help. I filled out the form last Wednesday.
ReplyDeleteHi, I have signed up and I know I received the confirmation email, but I can not find it now. Could you possibly help me with this. Jackie Brazo Sturgis, Michigan
ReplyDeleteI filled out a match form on behalf of my company 1 week ago on 8/31 but have not heard back - we are open to all ages. What is the typical response time?
ReplyDeleteThank you,

Hi there!
ReplyDeleteI filled out the form for my school to adopt another school a week ago and have not heard anything from you all yet. I realized this may take some time but could you please send me a quick email confirming you received my form? People are very eager to help and I'd like to give them some sort of time frame.
Thanks!

I signed up last wedensday evening and have not yet received an email. Could you please let me know when we might hear something? My 3rd grade team or 4 teachers is excited to get our kiddos involved.

My company would love to help, but our donations have to go to organizations that 501c3 status. Do you know if the schools fall under that? Would love to find a way to make it work!
ReplyDeleteHi.....I also signed up to individually help a classroom and I know my school system also has. But no emails have been received. I signed up on August 29. I also noticed all the latest questions are not being answered. Have all the schools been paired with someone? Just would like to know one way or the other if we should keep collecting materials.
ReplyDeleteBless your SWEET heart for coordinating these efforts! I am certain you are on VERY busy lady. We are eager to assist as well and completed the form a week or so ago. We understand if opportunities have been filled and schools have been matched, however we wanted to reach out again and let you know that we are still ready, willing and able. Sending prayers for strength to get all things done and the wish for MOre hours in each day to accomplish it.

Is there anyone who might be organizing something like this for Irma? My colleagues and I wanted to sign up but we were too late!
ReplyDeleteHello, Beverly:
ReplyDeleteThank you for your heart in the aftermath of a trying, devastating time. I am unable to participate in your Adopt-A-Class program and unknowingly signed up for it. I contacted the four-five teachers who were matched to me and thanked them for their kindness.
Sincerely,
Lauren Bibeault
I signed up to help a class, but ha e not gotten an assignment yet. When will I hear something? :)
ReplyDeleteI know you're really busy with this awesome project. I signed up two weeks ago and haven't heard anything. Should I assume you don't need any more help? I've already collected supplies so I guess at this point, I will seek a school on my own if I don't hear anything this week. Nancy Maguire
ReplyDeleteI'm supporting a class in Dickinson, TX. Their school district was hit hard and is in a low income area of southwest Houston. The district has a 501c3 educational foundation which can take tax deductible donations for the benefit of the schools. Many of the classes have not been matched yet.

DeleteHey Briana,
ReplyDeleteI was hoping that I could adopt a classroom. I am a middle school teacher in New Jersey. I just tried to use the form and saw that it has closed since the last time I checked (I needed to approve it with my Principal first). Any other ways I can donate materials???

I submitted my information and email address to adopt a school and haven't heard anything yet. Please let me know what my status is?? I have students and parents and other teachers waiting to find out.
ReplyDeleteThank you,
Jacky Martin

I have submitted my information awhile back. When will we know the status on getting help?
ReplyDeleteCould you please post a general status of where you are in the process of assigning classrooms? While waiting, we've had an earthquake, Irma and at least 123 wildfires burning in the northwest. Thank you for taking on this endeavor.
